The Sound of Adrian Borland

2006_06_flyer_borland_tribute.jpgParadiso, June 4th 2006.
Recently I visited the tribute concert ‘The Sound of Adrian Borland’ at Amsterdam’s Paradiso. The name Adrian Borland always makes me think of that concert in the early 90’s.

“To attend at a concert of Current 93 may not be a good idea if you are not of a pure heart or if you are missing someone special. Nevertheless, I did.” A highly personal account…

Current 93 – Antwerp 2006

c93_antwerp.gif Recently I had the privilege to attend two Current 93 concerts. Since they don’t often play nearby and because it was announced that this was their first and last European tour, I decided to visit both of their Belgian gigs. The location of both nights was the small cultural centre Luchtbal, situated in a somewhat remote suburb of Antwerp.

Chantier Musical festival

chantierfestival.jpgLe Chantier, Paris
5-6-7-8 mai 2006

Last week the first Chantier Musical festival took place in Paris. The people of Gae Bolg, in collaboration with the Cynfeirdd label, organized the event. In advance the line-up already looked impressive, with many acts I never saw live. Le Chantier Musical proved indeed to be a unique experience, which I will not forget quickly.

IRM + Ordo Rosarius Equilibrio

flyer_irmordo.jpgGoudvishal, Arnhem. February 18, 2006.

The small but cosy & dark Goudvishal was the venue for two notable slices of Cold Meat. Other than being Swedish and sharing the same label, there do not seem to be many similarities in the music of IRM and Ordo Rosarius Equilibrio.

Summer Darkness 2005

Estampie Spiritual Front
I attended only a small part of this year’s Summer Darkness festival, mainly on Friday. There was a nice opening concert by Estampie in the mighty Dom Church. As always they were excellent musicians, and the atmosphere and acoustics of the church were very suited for their traditional medieval music. In Ekko there was a special Cold Meat Industry evening.

Wave Gotik Treffen 2005

13 – 16 May 2005, Leipzig (Germany), various locations.
WGT 2005 ticket My memory does not always serve me well, but I guess this was my fifth visit to the Wave Gotik Treffen in Leipzig since my first time in 1998. The yearly Easter festival, which has organically grown into a major gothic event, was already held for the fourteenth time. Around 20.000 people from all over the world made the journey to eastern Germany to see around 170 bands and acts at approx. 20 different locations. Of course they were way too many bands that I wanted to see playing at the same time, but still I managed to attend about 20 concerts.Thursday was our day of arrival. We settled down at our hotel (I’ve never been much of an outdoor camping type), picked up the festival tickets, had dinner with our fellow Dutch travellers and made a long walk to feel the vibe of the city again. We were ready for the festival…

Dead Can Dance

Nederlands Congres Centrum (NCC), PWA Zaal, The Hague
12 March 2005

Dead Can Dance poster Dead Dan Dance is of course a legendary band, and high on my wishlist of bands to see live. From various people I heard euphoric comments about how good Brendan Perry are Lisa Gerrard are on stage. The fact that they split up in 1998 made it unlikely that I would ever get a chance to see Dead Can Dance perform. I only attended a Brendan Perry solo concert once in Amsterdam. But suddenly, a few months ago, it was announced that Perry and Gerrard would go on the road again, with a new band of musicans. I was not the only one craving to see them live, because the 13-date European tour was quickly sold out. It will be followed by a North American tour.
