Reviews: electro

(ebm / dark electro / minimal electro / elektroclash / synthpop)

Klingelton 17 – S/T

Klingelton 17 is one of the obscure 80’s DDR bands in the field of NDW / minimal music. This 7” was pressed in the 90’s but never really distributed and sold. NLW discovered this record and now made them available after all these years. Only 150 copies were pressed so it is a true collector’s […]

Echo West – In pop we trust

The title of the album is chosen very well. After the more industrial/gothic influenced album ‘Echoes Of The West’ this new cd features tracks with hints at different pop music styles.

Android Lust – Devour, rise, and take flight

The second album on Projekt from Android Lust aka Shikhee. An album full of emotion, with tracks that vary a lot, but which have a root in industrial music and are mostly defined by Shikhee’s special, beautiful voice.

Dive vs. Diskonnekted – Frozen

Dirk Ivens is of the main personae in the Belgian electronic music scene. The Klinik, Dive and Sonar are his best known projects. Not as well-known yet is Jan Dewulf, but his project Diskonnekted got Dirk Ivens interested to collaborate.

Orange Sector – Für Immer Kalt Wie Stahl

Orange Sector is one of the old time EBM bands. They split up long time ago, but also came back together in 20004. Their previous two releases didn’t fully convince me. But now there is this EP and the story is really different.

Zombie Girl – Back from the Dead

Zombie Girl is a new project bij Sebastian R. Komor, of Icon Of Coil and Muscle And Hate fame. For this project he collaborates with his wife Renee Cooper-Komor. This EP however is their first and only release so far.

Human Puppets – The Future From The Past

From Greece come the Human Puppets. Last year they released their debut 7” which was received very well in minimal wave circles. Now there is their debut LP.

Silence – Key

Silence is a project that already released quite a lot of music to those interested, but hardly got heard after all. Now they have signed to Accession Records, and this first double cd on this label brings us especially a recap of what they did before and some unreleased material.

Pseudo Code – Licht

Pseudo Code was a Belgian band that was active in the early 80’s. The band had a link with Bene Gesserit and can be described as an experimental/minimal pop band with a sound dominated by electronics.

Umwelt, Blotnik Brothers, Bytecon

Satamile is the self-proclaimed ‘longest running electro music label in NYC, devoted to pushing electro into the future’. On their roster are better known acts like Lowfish, Decal and Umwelt, but also various new names. This review describes 3 Satamile records.

Judah – Cool crap

Italian acts often have that extra coolness factor, perhaps it’s their sense of style or their feeling for seduction. The completely new act Judah convinces me with this short album, which borrows heavily from the electronic past but sounds entertaining nevertheless.

Magnetize – Anti-Chord EP

Both the artist Magnetize from Ireland and the label Templedog from the UK were completely obscure to me untill this release. Anti-Chord is a 12″ EP with four instrumental tracks that fuse a wide range of electronic styles.

Absolute Body Control – Lost/Found

Absolute Body Control was founded in 1980 by Dirk Ivens. This double cd with 44 tracks is a welcome release. Most material of this pioneering Belgian act only appeared on tape.

Feindflug – Volk und Armee

It has been a while since we heard from Feindflug. Volk und Armee is the title of their latest album and it brings us the kind of heavy artillery music we might expect from them.

V/A – Ik Was

Ik Was is a tribute to the elektro band Ich Bin. Eight totally different artists contributed a track to his cd.

V/A – Five years anniversary: volume 2

volume two in the anniversary series of Berlin based record store and label Das Drehmoment. If you are into contemporary dancefloor friendly electro this is a very nice record for you.

Puyo Puyo – The Love & Furry EP

Puyo Puyo produces crazy lo-fi elektro tunes. Often the sounds used will remind you of the sounds that come out of an 8 bit game console.

Celluloide – Bodypop E.P.

Celluloide has received loads of praise on their two synthpop albums “Naive Heart” and “Words Once Said”. Now the French project is back with the “Bodypop E.P.”.

No More - Dreams: early recordings

No More is best known for the track ‘Suicide Commando’, an early minimalistic EBM piece. This LP compiles the early work of the band.

Saal 2 - Weil das System nicht funktioniert!

The Neue Deutsche Welle band Saal 2 is probably only known to a few connoisseurs of this music genre. Their song ‘Angst vorm Tanzen’ is a small hit on the minimal/NDW dancefloor.
