Laufeyiar Sonr - Vorst
in ambient, Reviews
Laufeyiar Sonr left a good impression on me with a couple of demo cd-r’s. Now an official debut cd is released on Belgium’s Neuropa Records. “Vorst” comes in a 7″-size cool blue sleeve, designed by Nikolay Saveliev, who did some more nice artwork for Neuropa before.
Not too much is known about Laufeyiar Sonr, except that it is a Dutch one-man project who released his work in the past on the Nijmegen-based Tuchtunie label (and who has, judging from his name, an interest in Norse mythology). “Vorst” means ‘frost’ and it’s indeed a good name for the chilling sounds on this cd. The music is situated between cold electronica and dark ambient, with classical loops and industrial noises added to the mix, which will appeal to lovers of the more atmospheric Cold Meat acts.
Most of the tracks did I know already from the demo’s, but I enjoyed hearing them again. The best pieces are at the start of the album, like the filmic ‘Through the Burren’ with loads of strings and the brooding ‘Grimhild’ with dark rumbling machinery. Further on the pace of the album gets a bit faster, but also threatens to become a bit monotonous because of the repetive loops and staccato rhythms. But as the album ends with the mysterious soundscape ‘Grey park’, I must conclude that the overall impression of this album balances to the positive side, with various nice sounds and moods.
