Sally Doherty and the Sumacs – Black is the Colour (TIG 004CD)
In this, her fifth album, Sally Doherty explores some traditional music from Scotland, Ireland, France, Spain and Mexico; as well as her own compositions that fit beautifully with the traditional compositions contained herein.
Doherty has interpreted the folk songs in different ways depending on their moods and atmospheres. The resulting CD does not particularly come across as a ‘folk album’ as with Doherty’s other releases it has an original sound and atmosphere that makes her music unique.
Songs sung in an early French mediaeval style combine with orchestral arrangements and dark European theatre arrangements to bring us Doherty’s darkest female emotions.
