Coph Nia – Holy War EP

After the debut album ‘That which remains’ comes a mini cd from this Swedish dark ambient project. It contains 4 tracks: – Briefing – Holy War [pt.1 – enter] – The Binah/Satharyal Complex – Holy War [pt.3 – remobilize] ‘Briefing’ is a short dark instrumental intro. Then the big bang comes with ‘Holy war pt…

Sonne Hagal – Starkadr

This German act earlier released the 10″ Sinnreger on Eis & Licht, which mostly contained neo-folk music, just as on the split lp with Aurum Nostrum, which was also made this year. The two tracks on this single are more electronic pieces, with an ambient/ritual character…

Leger des Heils – The strength of will

This beautifully looking single comes in a luxurious packaging and is very limited. Nice heavy vinyl, 2 postcards in Leni Riefenstahl-style and a fold-out sleeve that is sealed with wax. The band takes its name from a Dutch charity organisation of ‘Christian salvationist soldiers’…

Leger des Heils – Immortalitas

Earlier today I reviewed the 7″ single ‘The Strength of Will’, but this 10″ was in fact released earlier. Strange detail: the 7″ has to be played on 33 rpm and the 10″ on 45 rpm. This 10″ also has a nice fold-out sleeve, and the picture of the little boy on the cover is also added as a postcard. The A-side contains three tracks: Animus, Roses and Paradisus…

Novy Svet vs Circus Joy – Roma Total

The undertitle of this 10″ is ‘an italiandaustrian lo.fi ep’, which already gives you the impression that we deal with some strange music here. I don’t know the Italian formation Circus Joy, but from the Austrian Novy Svet anything can be expected, except ‘normal’ music. The vinyl features 2 collaborative tracks + 2 tracks by each band…

Organisation Toth – Follow the red örder

An obscure 10″ released by the French label Athanor. Organisation Toth, named after a NS-organization, is also a French act, coming from Marseille. I don’t know much about them, only that they released a 10″; on Athanor before, called ‘The voice of terror’. The record states that Organisation Toth consists of T.ESTUD .O.siris with Frater .Th. feat. The Spirit Of E.V.OL…..

Aurum Nostrum / Sonne Hagal – Sinister Practices / In bright sunshine

Two fairly young German bands on a nice looking split LP, each contributing 4 songs. This is the second release of the Ring-Tor label, earlier they brought us the debut album ‘Whip of Mind’ from Aurum Nostrum. I must say that this band has grown, these new songs, that are a bit more tranquil, sound more mature than on their debut…

Blood Axis and Allerseelen – The March of Brian Boru / Kaferlied

Two great bands on this split single, that is not so new (1998), but which I only recently obtained at a record fair.

Allerseelen – Canco de Somni / Marqués de Púbol

The cover was the main temptation that brought me to buy this new single from Allerseelen. It contains, both on the front and on the back, a beautiful photo of an equally beautiful woman’s face by the Austrian photographer Helmut Wolech, reminding me of sculptures of angels on graveyards in southern Europe…

Tempesta Noire – Wolves and cathedrals

This single is called ‘Wolves and cathedrals’ and on the painting on the cover there is indeed a a wolf depicted, amidst the ruins of a a cathedral. I don’t know too much about this German neo-folk act, but I’ve encountered them before on the sampler ‘The Dark Ages’…

Tempesta Noire – The outset for…

Earlier today I review the latest single from Tempesta Noire, ‘Wolves and cathedrals’. I liked it so much that I didn’t hesitate when I saw this older single for a reasonable price at a record fair. The two tracks on this release were recorded in 1999…

Thurnemans – Wilhelm

This duo was discovered by Lina Babydoll, so I’ve heard. This is the second Thurnemans single, released by Entartete Musik, ‘a releasing division of Der Deutsch Generalische Generalstab’. The label itself describes the music as ‘harsh high energy “backtobasic”-industrial’…

Victoria – Homo Rattus

This new project is a collaboration between Tomas Pettersson of Ordo Rosarius Equilibrio and Peter Pettersson of Sophia/Arcana. If you put these two Cold Meat masters together in the studio/on stage you must get something special! Well, at least they must have had a lot of fun, especially when you listen to the ‘rat’ track on this single…

Sophia – Death, dumb and blind

Ho ho ho, Sophia stays productive! When Peter Petterson was only active in Arcana, fans had to wait with patience for the next release. Sophia though has brought us 2 cd’s, the 10″ ‘Aus der Welt’ and now this new ‘Xmas-single’ within a year. Furthermore Petterson also started the new project Victoria, and a new Arcana album is expected for the beginning of 2002…

Etoile Noire – Sleeping Black Eyes

Etolie Noire, which means ‘black star’ was founded in January 2000 by Ferruccio Milanesi (bass) and Pasquale Scotti (vocals). Those are not the least names in the Italian dark music scene, because both are active in various other projects, like Argine, Anima in Fiamme, Nadir and Amok. Later they were joined by Augusto Maiolino (guitar) and Alessio Sica (drums)…

In Slaughter Natives – Recollection

If you say Cold Meat Industry, then one of the first bands to come to my mind is In Slaughter Natives. Their dark and powerful music belongs to the most popular on the Swedish label and has inspired many bands over the years. Four great albums were made by ISN and they still sound as powerful as when they came out…

Darkwood – Flammende Welt

On this third album Darkwood proves to be one of the best neo-folk bands of the moment. Whereas the first album was a mixture of folk and electronic tracks and the previous album ‘Heimat & Jugend’ was mostly of an industrial/soundscape nature, on ‘Flammende Welt’ the project around Henryk Vogel brings us intimate acoustic neo-folk songs…

In the Nursery – Engel

It is remarkable how many albums In the Nursery has made with a constant high quality. Their latest work “Engel” again is very agreeable. The music of ITN always has been very filmic, that’s why the brothers Klive and Nigel Humberstone have made various film scores for silent movies. Some ITN tracks have also been used for well-known movies like ‘Interview with the Vampire’…

Challenge of Honour, A – Only Stones Remain

After various demo’s and cdr’s this is the first regular cd of the Dutch act A Challenge of Honour, released by the French label Divine Comedy Records. This isn’t the only French connection, because a few paintings of the great artist Jean-Marc Dauvergne were used for the cover artwork. A Challenge of Honour was founded by a German guy, Johan K. He was joined by Dutchman Peter S…

Darkwood – Heimat & Jugend

This is the second album of the German neo-folk act around Henryk Vogel, Darkwood. Although, neo-folk, the debut was for a large part dominated by folky songs, but this new cd only contains ambient/industrial tracks! No acoustic tracks and singing on this release, just electronics and samples are on the menu this time …
