one of the nicest popmusic programs on dutch tv must be ‘single luck’. each edition deals with another big hit made by one hit wonders. last time it was about the dreadful ‘if i had words’ by yvonne keeley & scott fitzgerald (1977). what i did not know whas that the melody was taken from a well-known organ symphony by camille saint-saens. all that producer jonathan hodge had to do was to come up with some lyrics, indeed ‘if i had words’. singers yvonne & scott were until then only active as session and commercial singers. they had not seen each other before shooting the videoclip. ‘if i had words’ was the third videoclip in history, after ‘bohemian rhapsody’ and ‘mull of kintyre’. and an old story: though the single sold 30.000 copies a day, both singers never received a penny…
in the next edition this friday: ‘kaapren’ varen’, the only hit of dutch folk group fungus and a true classic!
