Apparently the 80’s are still trendy. Many fashionable contemporary bands are clearly influenced by this ‘golden era’ and countless cover versions are being made.
Nouvelle Vague, a project of French producers Marc Collin and Olivier Libaux, has created an album full of new wave classics. Well-known songs by The Cure, Joy Division, The Clash and others have been given a rather special treatment: they are performed in a jazzy, loungy bossanova style, performed by various female singers. Perhaps an original idea, but not entirely convincing, most songs sound rather similar and shallow.
The French electro pop act Celluloide also has recorded some of their 80’s favourites. The free downloadable Naphtaline EP contains 6 adaptaptions of work by the likes of Siouxsie, Sisters of Mercy and Lush. Rather minimal and without too much pretentions, but quite enjoyable, especially their version of Dead Can Dance’s In power we entrust the love advocated.
