For Against and Coastal

Interesting new stuff on the US indie label Words On Music:

  • For Against – Echelons
  • Re-release of For Against’s acclaimed debut album from 1987 -available for the first time on CD. Remastered and presented in a 6-panel digipack design. ‘Echelons’ blends early Factory Records atmospherics with the aggressive jangle of early R.E.M., juxtaposed against the earnest and isolated voice of Jeffrey Runnings.

  • Coastal – Halfway To You
  • Coastal’s follow-up album to 2001’s self-titled CD is a welcome reminder that leisurely-paced music can also shimmer and beguile. The album features nine new songs that retain the fragile beauty of the band?s debut, but evoke a more textured ambiance, owing in part to the wider array of instrumentation employed ? such as cello, viola, bells, and found samples.
