I got to know Dawn & Dusk Entwined through the magnifique sampler Lucifer Rising (with Blood Axis, Endura, Allerseelen, Ain Soph etc.). Their song ‘Morning Star’ was the highlight on that compilation to me. So when I saw that World Serpent released a full cd of Dawn & Dusk Entwined I ordered it instantly. I don’t know much about the band, the man behind it is called David Sabre, I think it is a one-man project (?), coming from France, the booklet is not very informative.
‘Morning Star’ is the opening track of the album, in a different version though than on the compilation. It is a dark, militaristic bombastic song, with loud percussion, much more up-tempo than the rest of the album. Many tracks are more dark atmospheric like, with spoken-word vocals to it. It reminds a bit of bands like Endura, Allerseelen, Der Blutharsch. According to World Serpent, “D&DE aim to bring to light elements of our great European culture & history, amongst other things, mythology (Nordic, Graeco-Roman), pre-Christian and early Mediaeval Paganism & values. They also explore the feelings these subjects evoke when confronted with the modern world”.
Well, listening to the music surely gives you the feeling of travelling in time and space, to visit mystic places. These themes are also reflected in the artwork of the booklet (e.g. Stonehenge). The cd has surprised me a little, because most songs differ from the one I already knew, the music is more ambient-oriented, but is is a nice album though.
