Schneewittchen – Schneewittchen

Schneewittchen is the German duo Marianne Iser and Thoma Duda. They are not really a band but more a cabaret/theatre group. Next to cd’s they also produce theatre pieces. This third cd is a combination of music and theatre play. The theme of the play is Snowwhite, the main character from the fairy tale. But Schneewittchen is not the figure you know from the Walt Disney movie, but a dark variation on it. In this play she is the high priestess of the dark side.

Musically this is worked out in a mix of rock- and gothic music with some classical elements. The music has a lot in comparison with the contemporary work of Goethes Erben, although the vocals are reminiscent of Nina Hagen. This results in theatrical music that would not be out of place in a Kurt Weill play.

Schneewittchen is a varied cd with a lot of musical diversity on it. Through the theatrical character of the music and the storyline this record could be best listened to as a whole. Later this month Schneewittchen will be performing
live at Paradiso in Amsterdam as part of the Gotham Festival. This is a nice opportunity to see how the group brings their music and story live at the
stage.
