Slick Rogers – The Driver EP

The (recent re-issued) Tecroc Brainiac EP on Kommando 6 had some clear references to old skool black electro by artists like Afrika Bambaataa and Cybotron. This EP by Slick Rogers sounds even more like classic black electro.

Most tracks are build around deep bass sounds, cold clicks, clear beats and moody synth lines. The vocals play an important factor in giving this record a “black sound”. They are not rap, but they would be if the lyrics were pronounced faster.

On the A-side there is both a vocal and an instrumental version of The Driver, a gloomy track which will do well on the dancefloor. ‘Slick vs. Bloodfire’ has some very evident hiphop references due to the vocal delivery and the scratches. A potential cub hit is ‘Drive me to a secret place’ which is a very catchy tune. Despite it is catchy, it still is a raw and dark electro track with an aggressive feeling.

Even if you like European elektro better then classic black electro (like me), you should give this record a try. It combines European darkness with some “black” elements. In this case it results into a succesful blending of traditions.
