Wakeford, Tony – Paris

Another part in the Sol Invictus live archive series, after “Trieste”and “Bruges”. This time the setting is Paris, the Theatre Dubois to be precise. This concert took place in November 1994, and is mostly a solo concert of Tony Wakeford. On various songs his acoustic guitar is supported by the lovely violin sounds of Nathalie van Keymeulen and CĂ©line Marleix-Bardeau. It is a decent performance, the intimate, bare sound of guitar and voice are very fitting, while the lovely string arrangements on a few songs add a lovely atmosphere.

I find especially the second part of the performance worthwhile, the voice of Tony gets more convincing and the overall sound more dynamic. I don’t think this is one of the most essential Sol Invictus / Tony Wakeford recordings, but fans certainly will not be displeased by it. A nice feature is that it contains some songs rarely performed live, such as ‘Above the Sun’, an absolute highlight, ‘Nothing Changes’ and ‘The Stones Fall’. The sound is raw and direct, and the recording quality is very clear.
