Recording angels document all good and bad deeds of a man in the book of life. from the book "…als lebten die Engel auf Erden"
Gerald Axelrod (1962) is a photographer based in Austria. I got to know his work through the wonderful book "…als lebten die Engel auf Erden" (1997). This book contains 84 beautiful black-and-white photos of angel statues in Catholic cemeteries around Italy, with accompanying texts. Through these timeless, mystical sculptures a unity between beauty and death is created. His second book, "Wo die Zeit keine Macht hat", shows the mystical and ancient places of Ireland. In August 2002 a third book by Gerald Axelrod will be published: "… denn weiter als der Himmel ist die Liebe". It will contain more photos of graveyard sculptures and angels, in Paris, Vienna and Italy. More information about the work of Axelrod can be found on his website.
