Biography:
This English formation around the twin brothers Klive and Nigel Humberstone was formed in 1981. ITN has produced an impressive and varied output so far. The music of In the Nursery combines classical influences with the possibilities of modern electronic techniques. Beautiful female vocals (sometimes in French) and lots of percussion (like a military snare drum) are some of their trademarks. Part of their music is rather poppy or danceable, other work is more neo-classical or bombastic. Their most well-known track is probably ‘Compulsion’.
A good overview of ITN’s work gives the compilation “Exhibit”, spanning their career from 1986 till 1998 and bringing together great tracks like ‘Guarded Rites’, ‘Blue religion’ and ‘Duality’. In the last years the band has produced various soundtracks, mostly scores for old silent movies, like “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari”. They even made the music for a computer game, “Engel”. Favourite albums of ITN for me are “Sense” (1991) and “Anatomy of a Poet” (1994). Live performances of In The Nursery are always spectacular.
